Discounts and reductions

Brentwood's 4.2% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Brentwood's Council Tax Reduction grid

Brentwood's working-age Council Tax Reduction has been a banded discount since 1 April 2020. Households with a disabled member can get up to 100%. All other working-age households can get up to 75%. The council ignores child benefit, child maintenance, PIP, DLA, adoption and fostering allowances and bereavement benefits, plus £20 a week of earnings. Universal Credit with limited capability for work also counts as a disability.

  • You need less than £6,000 in savings.
  • Owner-occupiers can only claim in Bands A to E. Tenants can claim in any band.
  • If you qualify for at least 25% and you, your partner or a child you get child benefit for is disabled, the reduction goes up to 100%.
  • You can be fined up to £70 if you don't report a change of circumstances within two months.

Paying and premiums

Non-direct-debit payments are due on the 1st of each month. Direct debits can be on the 1st, 7th, 14th, 21st or 28th. The standard 10 instalments give you a "payment holiday" in February and March. You can also pay in two instalments (1 May and 1 September) or in full by 1 May. If two direct debits bounce in one year, you lose the option to pay by direct debit.

Since 1 April 2025 second homes pay a 100% premium, so £4,516.28 at the average Band D rate. Brentwood's published liability guidance says the long-term empty premium applies after two years: 100%, rising to 200% after five years and 300% after ten.
