Discounts and reductions

Slough's 5% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Slough's income-banded Council Tax Support (up to 70%)

Slough Borough Council's Cabinet approved an updated income-banded Council Tax Support scheme for working-age households on 19 January 2026. The most you can get is 70% off. That means even the lowest-income working-age household pays at least 30% of its bill: £643.85 a year on a Band C home, the most common band here, in 2026/27.

Your band depends on your household net income, including any partner, with an allowance for children. If you get a passported benefit and have under £6,000 in savings, you go straight into Band 1 for the full 70%. Passported benefits include Income Support, income-based JSA, income-related ESA and Universal Credit with no earnings.

  • Working-age claimants with more than £6,000 in savings get nothing, even on a passported benefit. The pension-age limit is £16,000.
  • The council ignores Disability Living Allowance, PIP, Attendance Allowance, Child Benefit and War Pension when it works out your income.
  • Another adult in your home cuts your support by £5 a week, or by £11 a week if they earn £200 or more gross a week. No deduction is made if you get the DLA care component, PIP daily living or AFIP, or if you are registered blind.
  • Most claims start from the Monday after the council gets your completed form. Apply online and email your evidence to the benefits team, putting your claim reference in the subject line.

Empty homes, second homes and paying in Slough

Slough gives no discount on empty homes. After a year empty and unfurnished, the council adds a 100% premium, so a Band C home pays £4,292.34. The premium rises to 200% after five years and 300% after ten. Since 1 April 2025 a furnished home where nobody lives has paid the second homes premium from day one.

Direct debit is the council’s preferred way to pay. You can choose the 1st, 8th, 15th, 25th or 28th of the month.
