Discounts and reductions

Tandridge's 5% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Tandridge District Council raised its own Band D charge by 2.99% for 2026/27, from £252.32 to £259.86, or just under £5 a week. Surrey County Council's share rose 4.99%, including the adult social care precept, to £1,938.42. Surrey Police's share rose 4.44%, to £352.57. Together, these three shares rose by 4.70%, before parish precepts are added.

Empty homes and second homes in Tandridge

Tandridge is one of the councils that waited to bring in a second homes premium. Until 31 March 2027 a furnished home with no resident pays the normal 100% charge. From 1 April 2027 it will pay 200%. On a Band D home at today's average rate, that would mean £5,189.70 rather than £2,594.85.

Empty and unfurnished homes get no discount and pay the full charge from day one. From 1 April 2026 the 100% long-term empty premium starts after one year empty, instead of two. The premium is 200% after five years and 300% after ten years.

Council Tax Reduction and Second Adult Rebate

You can claim Council Tax Reduction through your MyTandridge account if you are on a low income. Universal Credit does not include help with council tax, so you must claim separately. You cannot get it if you have more than £16,000 in capital, unless you are over 60 and get Guarantee Pension Credit.

  • Second Adult Rebate can help if you do not qualify yourself but share your home with a low-income adult who is not your partner and pays you no rent.
  • It is 25% if every second adult is on Income Support, income-based JSA, income-related ESA or Pension Guarantee Credit.
  • It is 15% if their combined gross income is £188.99 a week or less, 7.5% between £189 and £245.99, and nothing from £246.
  • A Council Tax Discretionary Payment can cover a shortfall in cases of severe financial hardship.
