Band 8c's re-earnable top point
Band 8c is one of the three bands (8c, 8d and 9) where reaching the top is not the end of performance review. Twelve months after you pass your final pay step, 5% or 10% of basic salary becomes "re-earnable": if you meet the Annex 23 standards (appraisal done, no live formal capability process or disciplinary sanction, mandatory training complete and, for managers, your team's appraisals done) you keep the full £91,609; if not, pay can be cut from your pay step date and restored a year later once the standards are met again.
In cash terms that is £4,580 (5%) or £9,161 (10%) a year at the top of Band 8c. After tax, NI and the pension contribution, a 10% reduction would lower take-home by about £385.52 a month. Staff have a right to contest the decision through the locally agreed procedure, and factors outside your control, such as organisational or operational problems that stopped you completing training, should not count against you.
Band 8c and very senior manager pay
Band 8c covers 630 to 674 job-evaluation points. That 630-point mark matters: the handbook says the separate pay arrangements for chief executives and board directors may also apply to other senior posts that evaluate above 630 points. So some posts that would score as 8c or higher are paid outside Agenda for Change altogether, under those separate senior pay arrangements.
National profiles starting at 8c include Arts Therapies Consultant (632 to 704 points), Podiatric Consultant (Surgery) (658 to 707), Head of Arts Therapies, Orthoptist/Optometrist Consultant Head of Service, Head of Estates, and the Nursing and Midwifery 8c–9 profiles used for heads of nursing and midwifery. NHS Health Careers gives head of human resources, consultant clinical scientist and consultant paramedic as Band 8c examples.
Band 8c and the pension annual allowance
Every Band 8c point pays the top 12.5% NHS Pension rate. The 2015 Scheme builds 1/54th of pensionable pay each year, so a year at the top point of £91,609 adds £1,696 of annual pension. For tax, defined benefit growth is valued at 16 times the increase in pension, so that year's build-up alone is a pension input of roughly £27,143 against the £60,000 annual allowance, before allowing for revaluation above inflation.
That leaves headroom for most 8c staff, but a promotion with a large pay jump, or benefits still building in the older 1995 or 2008 Sections, can use up more. Unused allowance from the previous three tax years can be carried forward.
Frequently asked questions
How much is NHS Band 8c per hour?
£40.66 an hour at entry and £46.85 at the top in 2026/27, based on a 37.5-hour week (annual ÷ 52.143 ÷ 37.5).
What is Band 8c take-home pay per month?
About £4,225.58 at entry in England with no student loan, after income tax, NI and a 12.5% NHS Pension contribution. At the top of the band it is about £4,735.00.
How much did Band 8c go up in 2026/27?
Entry pay rose from £76,965 to £79,504 (+£2,539), the 3.3% pay award from 1 April.
How long does it take to reach the top of Band 8c?
after 5 years, subject to meeting pay-step requirements.
Can NHS Band 8c pay go down?
Yes, in one situation. Twelve months after reaching the top of Band 8c, 5% or 10% of salary (£4,580 or £9,161) becomes re-earnable each year and can be withheld if the Annex 23 standards are not met.
Are all senior NHS managers paid on Agenda for Change?
No. Board-level posts are outside Agenda for Change, and the handbook allows the same separate arrangements for other senior posts that evaluate above 630 points, the bottom of Band 8c.
Will a Band 8c exceed the pension annual allowance?
Usually not from one year's build-up: at £91,609 it is roughly £27,143 of pension input against a £60,000 allowance. Large promotions or benefits in the older 1995 or 2008 Sections can change that.
