Discounts and reductions

Mid Devon's 5.4% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Mid Devon's income-grid Council Tax Reduction (up to 100%)

Since 1 April 2023, Mid Devon District Council's working-age Council Tax Reduction can cover 100% of the bill. Before that it was capped at 85%. The council looks up your weekly household income in a grid. If you get income-based JSA, income-based ESA or Income Support, you go straight into the 100% band.

Worked example: in 2026/27, a couple with no children and £200 a week of counted income falls in the 45% band. In a Band B home (£2,066.10), they get £929.74 off and pay £1,136.35. Households with earnings have £25 a week ignored before the grid is used. That alone can move a working family into a better band.

  • Weekly income limits from 1 April 2026. Savings or capital over £6,000 mean no reduction at all.
  • There are no deductions for other adults (non-dependants) living with you.
  • An extra £50 a week is ignored if anyone in the household gets DLA or PIP. Child Benefit, child maintenance, Carer's Allowance and disability benefits are not counted at all, and neither is the housing element of Universal Credit.
  • There is no time limit on backdating if you can show good cause. Changes take effect from the day they happen.

Annexes, job-related homes and occupied caravan pitches and boat moorings are excepted, and the council lists seasonal homes with planning limits on occupation among its 12-month exceptions.
