Council Tax Reduction in Mid Suffolk: fixed weekly contributions for Universal Credit claimants

Since 1 April 2023, working-age residents of Mid Suffolk can get up to 100% off their council tax. Mid Suffolk shares its revenues service with Babergh, and both councils changed their schemes at the same time. If you get Universal Credit, the council does not use a sliding taper. You pay a fixed weekly amount based on your monthly net earnings, so small pay changes do not trigger a new bill each month. Savings over £16,000 normally rule you out.

Worked example: a Universal Credit household earning £1,000 a month net pays £23.08 a week, or £1,200.16 a year. A Band B bill in Mid Suffolk is £1,802.02 in 2026/27, so the reduction is worth about £601.86, before the extra £50 explained below.

An extra £50 off for everyone on Council Tax Reduction

For 2026/27, Mid Suffolk is giving extra help to everyone on Council Tax Reduction who still has something to pay. It uses discretionary powers under section 13A(1)(c) of the Local Government Finance Act 1992. If you have more than £50 left to pay after discounts and reductions, it takes £50 off. If you have less than £50 left, your bill goes to nil. You do not need to claim, as the council applies it automatically and sends a new bill.

Empty homes, second homes and paying in Mid Suffolk

An empty, unfurnished home gets 25% off for its first 28 days. The 28 days belong to the property, not the owner. After one year empty, the bill doubles. That premium started on 1 April 2024. Before then it was an extra 50%, and only after two years. Homes empty five to ten years pay 300%, and those empty over ten years pay 400%. Homes undergoing major structural work can get 25% off for up to 12 months. Since 1 April 2025, second homes pay a 100% premium. The council says this is because of the shortage of available housing.

Instalments fall on the 1st of the month: 10 payments, 12 if you ask, two half-yearly payments (April and October), or one payment in April. Direct debits can be taken on the 1st, 8th, 14th, 22nd or 28th. The council's empty homes team, Houses for Homes, can help owners bring an empty home back into use.
