The rise in the total bill comes from Surrey County Council (including Surrey Fire and Rescue) and Surrey Police, which receive about 76% and 14% of the average Band D charge. The council says it keeps just 10p in each pound to run over 50 services for more than 159,000 residents. The council says it has received no core government funding since 2017. This is its last budget before it is merged into the new East Surrey Council in April 2027, as part of local government reorganisation in Surrey.

No empty-home discount, and a second homes premium after a year

- For a home to count as furnished, at least most rooms must be furnished to a minimal degree that would let them be used for their intended purpose. Homes your job contract requires you to live away from, such as a caretaker’s or groundskeeper’s home, still get 50% off.
