What car stamp duty is
Car stamp duty (called motor vehicle duty in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT, vehicle registration duty in Queensland and vehicle licence duty in WA) is a state tax charged when a vehicle is first registered in your name or transferred to you. It applies to new and used cars, from a dealer or a private seller. The dealer usually adds it to a drive-away price; on a private sale you pay it to the registration authority when you transfer the registration.
Duty is calculated on the dutiable value: the higher of the price you paid and the car's market value, including GST (and luxury car tax where it applies). Extended warranties are generally left out. Most states charge per $100 or part of $100, so a $45,050 car is charged as $45,100; Victoria charges per $200.
Worked examples by state
On a $45,000 car, duty ranges from $1,350 in New South Wales to $2,588 in Western Australia. NSW charges $3 per $100 up to $45,000 ($1,350) and $5 per $100 above, so a $60,000 car costs $2,100. In WA the rate itself slides between $25,000 and $50,000: a $40,000 car pays 5% of the whole value, $2,000.
Three states have price cliffs where the higher rate applies to the whole value. In Victoria a car at the $80,809 luxury threshold pays $3,402, but one $200 dearer pays $4,222. In Queensland a 4-cylinder car at $100,000 pays $3,000 and at $100,100 pays $5,005. Tasmania avoids a cliff with an 11% bridge band between $35,000 and $40,000. If you are negotiating near one of these points, a small discount can save far more in duty.
| State | On $30,000 | On $60,000 | On $90,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| New South Wales | $900 | $2,100 | $3,600 |
| Victoria | $1,260 | $2,520 | $4,680 |
| Queensland | $900 | $1,800 | $2,700 |
| Western Australia | $1,050 | $3,900 | $5,850 |
| South Australia | $1,140 | $2,340 | $3,540 |
| Tasmania | $900 | $2,400 | $3,600 |
| Australian Capital Territory | $951 | $2,270 | $4,194 |
| Northern Territory | $900 | $1,800 | $2,700 |
Electric and low-emission cars
Most EV duty concessions have ended. NSW stopped its EV exemption for purchases from 1 January 2024, Tasmania's ran to 30 June 2023, and the ACT's zero emission vehicle exemption ended on 31 August 2025 (EVs now pay the lowest AAA rate: $1,725 on $60,000 against $2,270 for a non-rated car). Queensland charges hybrids and EVs $2 per $100 instead of $3 ($1,200 on $60,000), and Victoria's green car rate keeps EVs on $8.40 per $200 above the luxury threshold. The NT is the only place with an active exemption: no duty on the first $50,000 of an electric or plug-in hybrid car until 30 June 2027 ($300 on a $60,000 EV).
Car stamp duty, GST and luxury car tax
- Duty is charged on the GST-inclusive price, so GST and duty stack: a $55,000 car in NSW includes $5,000 GST and attracts $1,850 duty on top.
- Luxury car tax is a separate federal tax of 33% on the value above $80,809 ($91,661 for fuel-efficient cars) in 2026β27. Victoria, Queensland and the ACT include it in the dutiable value.
- Stamp duty is not deductible for a private car. For a business car it forms part of the cost for depreciation, up to the car limit. Under a novated lease, duty is part of the on-road costs financed in the lease, with no GST credit.
- Some transfers, such as between spouses or from a deceased estate, can be exempt or charged a nominal amount. Each revenue office lists its own exemptions, so check before you pay.
