Which Australian tax calculator do I need?
Start from the question you are trying to answer. Each calculator does one job, uses the official rates for the year it shows, and runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere. Most people need the pay calculator first, then one of the specialist tools for a bonus, a tax return, super or property.

How the pay and tax calculators fit together
Three different numbers describe the same pay, and each calculator shows one of them. Your tax liability is what you actually owe for the year. Withholding is what your employer takes out of each pay to cover it. Your refund or bill is the difference between the two, settled when you lodge.
For a salary of $85,000 in 2026β27, the pay calculator and income tax calculator show $16,020 of income tax plus $1,700 of Medicare levy. The tax withheld calculator shows $682 taken from each fortnightly pay, or $17,732 across 26 pays. The tax return calculator then compares the two. Here they are only $12 apart, which is why an employee with one job and no deductions usually ends up close to square. Deductions, a second job, a bonus or a change of hours during the year widen the gap.
Weekly, fortnightly and monthly tax tables: which scale applies
The withholding tools reproduce the ATO's Schedule 1 formulas. The result depends on the scale your TFN declaration puts you on, not only on your pay. On $1,500 a week in 2026β27, an employer withholds $299 if you claimed the tax-free threshold. Without the threshold, for example in a second job, it withholds $409. A foreign resident is withheld $450. Ticking the study loan box adds $25 a week for HELP once you are on the threshold scale.
Use the weekly, fortnightly or monthly page that matches your payslip. Each page has a full table, so you can check a payslip line without entering anything. If the amount on your payslip is far from the table, the usual causes are the wrong scale on your TFN declaration, a missing study loan flag, or a bonus or back payment in that pay.
Tax time, super and study loan calculators
The tax return calculator is the only pay tool set to 2025β26, because that is the return being lodged between 1 July and 31 October 2026. Enter the figures from your income statement in myGov. The Medicare levy calculator works out the 2% levy, the low-income reduction and the surcharge for singles and families, including the surcharge tiers that start at $105,000, $123,000 and $164,000 for singles in 2026β27.
The super calculators use the 12% super guarantee and the $32,500 concessional cap that applies from 1 July 2026. The HECS-HELP calculator applies the marginal repayment system: nothing below $69,528, then 15% of each dollar above it, with a higher rate further up the scale.
Business, property and state tax calculators
GST, the sole trader calculator and capital gains tax are federal, so one set of rules covers the whole country. GST is 10%, and registration is compulsory once turnover reaches $75,000. Payroll tax, land tax and stamp duty are state and territory taxes, so their calculators ask for your state first and then use that revenue office's own thresholds and schedules.
The spread between states is wide. Payroll tax thresholds run from $1,000,000 to $2,500,000 of annual wages, and main rates range from 4.75% to 6.75%. That is why each state has its own page under the payroll tax, land tax and stamp duty calculators.
Where the numbers come from, and what the calculators leave out
Every rate, threshold and offset is taken from an official publication: the ATO for income tax, withholding, super and study loans; the Fair Work Commission and Fair Work Ombudsman for minimum wages; Services Australia for family payments; and each state revenue office for state taxes. Each calculator page lists its sources. When an official figure for 2026β27 has not been published yet, the calculator uses the latest published figure and says so. At present this applies to the Medicare levy low-income thresholds.
The calculators are estimates for typical situations. They do not replace your notice of assessment or advice from a registered tax agent. They do not model:
- income from several sources at once, such as rent, dividends and a business, beyond the inputs shown
- family-based thresholds in the pay calculator (the Medicare levy calculator handles families)
- tax offsets other than the low income and seniors offsets, such as the private health insurance rebate
- part-year residency, or employment termination payments other than redundancy
Frequently asked questions
Are these Australian tax calculators free?
Yes. Every calculator is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser, so the figures you enter are not stored or sent anywhere.
Which income year do the calculators use?
Most use 2026β27 rates (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027). The tax return calculator uses 2025β26, the year being lodged now. The pay calculator lets you switch between the two.
Which calculator should I use for a second job?
Use the tax withheld calculator with "no tax-free threshold" to check the second payslip, then add both salaries together in the income tax calculator to see your total tax for the year.
Are the results exact?
Withholding results follow the ATO formulas to the dollar. Annual tax results match the ATO rates, but your final tax depends on everything in your return, including deductions, other income and offsets.
