How pay progression works
- A teacher accredited at Graduate starts on Step 1; at Proficient on Step 3; at Highly Accomplished/Lead on the HALT salary (award cl. 3.5).
- Step 1 β Step 2 after one year of full-time service, subject to satisfactory performance through the annual performance and development process (cl. 3.6).
- Step 2 β Step 3 needs Proficient accreditation confirmed by the Teacher Accreditation Authority plus one year full-time at Step 2 (cl. 3.7).
- Steps 3 β 7 move one step per year of full-time service while Proficient accreditation is maintained (cl. 3.8).
- Step 7 β Highly Accomplished/Lead needs HALT accreditation and at least one year full-time at Step 7 (cl. 3.9).
- One year of full-time service for progression is 203 days (cl. 3.10); pay depends on maintaining accreditation (cl. 3.11).

How the 2024 award ties NSW pay to accreditation
The NSW teacher salary is set by the Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools and Related Employees) Salaries and Conditions Award 2024. Its classroom scale is standards-based: your step depends on your accreditation status as well as your years of service. A Graduate teacher starts on Step 1 and moves to Step 2 after a year. To go beyond Step 2 you need Proficient accreditation confirmed and a year at Step 2. Proficient teachers then move one step a year from Step 3 to Step 7, provided they keep their accreditation current.
A "year" of service for progression is 203 days of full-time service (cl. 3.10). Because progression counts full-time service, part-time teachers generally take longer to move a step. Pay at every step depends on maintaining accreditation (cl. 3.11), so letting it lapse can affect your salary, not just your registration.
At the top, Step 7 to HALT needs Highly Accomplished or Lead accreditation plus at least a year at Step 7. From 9 October 2026 that move is worth $8,575 a year ($133,422 to $141,997), or about $204.87 a fortnight after tax.
After the 9 October 2026 rise: what comes next
The 3% rise from the first full pay period on or after 9 October 2026 is the last one fixed in the award. Allowances rise by the same 3% on the same date (cl. 3.4). The award stays in force until 8 October 2027 and sets no increase after this one, so any rise from October 2027 depends on a new award or agreement being made for NSW teachers. Until that happens, the October 2026 rates continue to apply.
A Proficient teacher moving from Step 4 to Step 5 around the same time gets both the step and the 3% rise: $105,263 becomes $115,972, which is about $3,388.41 a fortnight after tax ($3,121.20 with a HECS-HELP debt). A new Proficient teacher on Step 3 earns $104,156 from 9 October 2026.
Casual teaching and salary packaging in NSW
Casual teachers are paid a daily rate set in Schedule 4 of the award, which includes a 5% loading in lieu of sick, family and community service and special leave and leave loading. The rate depends on your casual step: CT1 to CT2 after two full-time-equivalent years with the relevant accreditation, and CT2 to CT3 after a further two (cl. 23.8). From 9 October 2026 a day is worth $480.43, $538.73 or $599.85, up from $466.44, $523.04 and $582.38. Three days a week for 40 weeks at CT2 comes to about $64,648 before tax.
Salary packaging is available by agreement but must be cost neutral to the Department (cl. 8): if a benefit attracts fringe benefits tax, you reimburse it. NSW public schools are not FBT-exempt, so packaging is mostly extra super and novated leases. Use the salary sacrifice calculator linked below to see the tax saving on extra super.
