VGSA 2026 timeline and what it means for your pay

Victorian government school teachers voted 93.1% in favour of the Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2026. It is now with the Fair Work Commission and starts operating seven days after approval. Until then the VGSA 2022 rates shown on this page remain the legal rates. Once it operates, the first rise is backdated to the first pay period on or after 10 August 2026 and a 9.75% rise follows from 1 October 2026, so expect back pay in a lump once the new rates are loaded.

For a teacher on 2-1 the Victoria teacher salary goes from $94,415 to $106,758 once both rises apply, lifting take-home pay from about $2,826.16 to $3,148.09 a fortnight. The top classroom step goes from $118,063 to $121,600 in August and $133,456 in October. Full-time staff also get a $2,000 lump sum on commencement (pro rata for part-time). The agreement nominally expires on 10 August 2030.

Progression on 1 May and Range 3 roles

The salary progression cycle runs from 1 May to 30 April. If your performance and development plan is assessed as met, you move one subdivision on 1 May, and there is no quota. If you have less than six months' eligible service at your subdivision in that cycle, you wait until the next 1 May. So a teacher who reaches a new subdivision after early November will not progress the following May. Under VGSA 2026, a teacher who starts at 1-1 before 1 May gets a pro-rata lump sum on moving to 1-2 the next year.

Learning specialists and leading teachers share Range 3 and are paid the same (up to $129,544 now). Both are merit-selected positions, not automatic steps. From May 2027 VGSA 2026 also adds a 1% top-of-range allowance for teachers who have spent 12 months at 2-6 or 3-2.

CRT pay, leave loading and allowances

Casual relief teachers have no step scale: everyone gets $70.97 an hour up to $425.80 a day, with a minimum three-hour payment. Five full days a week for 40 weeks would be about $85,160 before tax, with no paid holidays. CRT rates under VGSA 2026 had not been published when we checked.

Ongoing teachers get a salary loading allowance (annual leave loading) of 17.5% of four weeks' salary, capped at $1,790 in 2026 and rising to $2,031 by 2029 under VGSA 2026. The new agreement also sets a remote allowance (Remote A $610 with dependants or $390 without; Remote B $360 or $235 a year) and a $1,250 a year special schools allowance.
