Discounts and reductions

Amber Valley's 4.8% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Council Tax Support in Amber Valley covers up to the full bill

Amber Valley Borough Council's 2026/27 Council Tax Support scheme sets the maximum reduction at 100% of the bill for working-age and pension-age claimants alike, before any deductions for other adults living with you. A household on a very low income in a Band A home could therefore have the whole £1,605.13 covered.

You must be liable for council tax on the home you live in and have no more than £16,000 in capital. Support is means-tested on household income. Pension-age claimants who live with other low-income adults (but not a partner) can claim second adult rebate instead.

Empty homes and second homes

Amber Valley gives a 50% discount on a home that is empty and substantially unfurnished for the first six calendar months. After that, the full charge applies. The discount belongs to the property, not the owner: if you buy a home that is already empty, the six months does not restart. A home must be lived in for at least six weeks before a new empty period can begin.

On a Band B home, the most common band here (13,150 homes), six months at half rate costs about £468.16 rather than £936.32. A furnished second home pays 100% from day one. The only exception is a job-related second home, which keeps a 50% discount.

Amber Valley's unoccupied-property pages do not list a long-term empty or second homes premium. When premiums were first allowed in 2013, the council said it had decided not to charge the extra 50% on homes empty for two years. If you own an empty home, ask the council tax team (01773 841440) what applies now.

Who set the 2026/27 bill, and help for care leavers

Full council agreed the 2026/27 council tax on 2 March 2026, and annual bills went out on 12 March 2026. Amber Valley collects the tax but keeps only a small share. On the council's own average breakdown, Derbyshire County Council takes 71%, the Police and Crime Commissioner 13%, Amber Valley 8% and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue 4%.

Since 1 April 2020 the council has run a council tax assistance scheme for care leavers. It is applied last: once every other discount, exemption and Council Tax Support award has been given, the scheme covers whatever is left of a qualifying care leaver's bill.
