Discounts and reductions

North West Leicestershire's 3.4% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

How North West Leicestershire works out Council Tax Support

North West Leicestershire District Council's working-age scheme pays up to 85% of the bill, so working-age claimants always pay at least 15%. Pensioners can get up to 100%. The council publishes the exact method. It converts your yearly bill to a weekly figure (divide by 365, or 366 in a leap year, then multiply by 7). Working-age support starts from 85% of that weekly figure, before deductions for income above your "applicable amount" and for other adults in the home.

Worked example: a Band B home (the most common band here) costs £1,880.82 in 2026/27. That is £36.07 a week. The most a working-age claimant can get is £30.66 a week, leaving at least £282.12 a year to pay.

  • Working-age savings under £6,000 are ignored. Between £6,000 and £16,000, each £250 (or part of £250) counts as £1 a week of income. Above £16,000 you get nothing unless you receive Guarantee Pension Credit.
  • Up to £300 a week of earnings can be ignored for childcare costs if you work.
  • If you get Universal Credit, your maximum UC amount is used as your applicable amount. You must still claim Council Tax Support from the council directly, because the Jobcentre does not pass claims on.
  • Working-age claims can be backdated up to six months with a good reason. Pension-age claims are checked automatically for the three months before you claimed.
  • Single pensioners living with other adults on low incomes can claim a Second Adult Rebate of up to 25%.

Empty homes and second homes in North West Leicestershire

An empty, unfurnished home pays nothing for its first month, but only if it was not already empty before you became liable. Since 1 April 2025 there has been no discount for empty homes needing major repairs. From the same date, the long-term empty premium starts after one year: 200% in total, 300% after five years and 400% after ten. Second homes have paid a 100% premium since 1 April 2026, a year after the earliest date allowed. A Band B second home now costs £3,761.64 a year.

If your job requires you to live elsewhere, your own unoccupied home may get 50% off. To pay over 12 months instead of 10, ask in writing. Requests made after April spread the remaining payments to March.
