Discounts and reductions
- Living alone: 25% off — a Band A bill in Barnsley drops from £1,550.64 to £1,162.98.
- Council Tax Reduction: Barnsley runs its own scheme for people on low incomes or benefits — rules differ from council to council in England.
- Disregards and exemptions: full-time students, student halls, some carers and people with a severe mental impairment are not counted; all-student homes pay nothing.
- Disabled Band Reduction: if your home has been adapted for a disabled person you may be billed one band lower (Band A homes get a reduction of 1/9 of Band D).
Barnsley's 3.8% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.
Barnsley kept its own rise to 3.4%
Barnsley Council chose not to use the full 4.99% allowed. It raised its own element by 3.4%, which it said matched inflation, and full council approved this on 26 February 2026. Police and fire precepts went up separately, so the overall Band D rise in the table above is 3.8%. The budget kept a cost-of-living payment for working-age Council Tax Support claimants and care leavers for another year, and set aside £10.3 million for highways maintenance.
Working-age Council Tax Support bands for 2026/27
Barnsley uses income bands. The maximum award is 85% of the bill, or 90% if someone in the household gets a relevant disability benefit. Working-age claimants need less than £6,000 in capital. Each non-dependant adult earning over £200 a week reduces your award by £7.50 a week. Pension-age claimants can still get up to 100%.
- Example: a single person with £120 a week of counted income in a Band A home (£1,550.64) gets 70% off and pays £465.19 for the year.
- Childcare costs are deducted from income, which can move you into a higher-support band. War pensions are ignored.
- You must send evidence within one calendar month of applying. Support usually starts the Monday after your claim arrives.
