Discounts and reductions

Camden's 4.8% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Camden's Council Tax Support: bands tied to the London Living Wage

Camden's working-age Council Tax Support is a banded scheme. If you are not working, or you and your partner earn less than £118.40 a week gross, you pay no council tax. Above that, the discount depends on your earnings band and whether you have children, or are disabled or a carer. The bands are linked to the London Living Wage and rise when it does. Your award stays the same while your pay moves within a band.

Example: a lone parent earning £200 a week gets 65% off. On a Band C flat (£1,962.27 in 2026/27) the bill falls to about £686.79. Registered childcare costs, up to £175 a week for one child or £300 for two or more, can be deducted from earnings before the band is worked out.

  • Another adult over 25 living with you who earns more than £110.80 a week cuts your support by 30% of the bill. A couple counts as one person.
  • You cannot claim with savings of £16,000 or more, unless you get Pension Credit Guarantee Credit. Universal Credit claimants must still apply separately.
  • For pension-age claimants Camden fully ignores war disablement and war widow's pensions, instead of the £10 a week the national rules require.

Garden squares, empty homes and the GLA share

Homes on some of Camden's garden squares pay a small extra charge on top of the standard band amount. It pays for the upkeep of the square, so two homes in the same band can get different bills.

Since 1 April 2025 a furnished second home in Camden pays double the standard rate, which is £5,396.23 for a Band E flat. A home that has been empty and unfurnished for 12 months or more also pays extra.

The Greater London Authority precept of £510.51 at Band D is set by the Mayor of London, not by Camden. Camden says its taxpayers will contribute £49.77 million to the GLA in 2026/27, and that the GLA element sits outside the 4.99% limit councils can raise their own charge by without a referendum.

Camden gives no discount on furnished second homes or long-term empty homes. A home that has just become empty and unfurnished pays nothing for one month from the date the furniture is removed. A home undergoing major repairs or structural alterations can get 25% off for up to 12 months.
