New: up to 100% off for terminal illness

From 1 October 2026 Brent offers a council tax reduction of up to 100% on your main home if you or someone in your household has a terminal illness. You need an SR1 (Special Rules) form from a medical professional. You will usually also need to qualify for Council Tax Support, but people in financial hardship with higher income or savings may still be considered. The reduction normally starts from the date the SR1 was issued and continues until the end of the second month after the person dies. To apply, email counciltax@brent.gov.uk with the subject "Application for Terminally Ill Council Tax reduction" and attach the SR1.

Care leavers, empty homes and instalments

  • Brent care leavers are exempt until age 25 if they live alone or only with other care leavers. The scheme does not cover care leavers supported by other councils.
  • Brent's empty-property page sets out long-term empty premiums (unfurnished for 12 months or more) of +100% for one to five years, +200% for five to ten years and +300% after ten. On that basis a Band D home empty for six years costs £6,705.81. Homes that were already empty before 1 April 2024 pay the premium Brent was charging at that time.
  • Second homes, including holiday homes and homes furnished but empty between tenancies, have paid a 100% premium since 1 April 2025: £4,470.54 at Band D.
  • Bills are normally paid in 10 monthly instalments from 1 April to 1 January, or 12 if you ask.
