Discounts and reductions

Redbridge's 4.8% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Redbridge’s five working-age reduction schemes

Redbridge does not use a single scale for working-age Council Tax Reduction. Instead, it puts you into one of five schemes, each with its own maximum, depending on whether anyone gets a disability benefit, whether there are children, and whether you are on benefits or in low-paid work. Even the most protected households get no more than 73% off.

  • No reduction is paid if it works out at less than £10 a week.
  • In schemes 2 to 5, support is cut by £10.59 a week for each other adult who is not working or is a full-time student, and by £21.18 a week for each adult in work. No cut is made for an adult who gets Carer’s Allowance. In scheme 1 no cut is made at all.
  • Pension-age residents can still get up to 100% off, and single pensioners can claim Second Adult Rebate.
  • If you already get Council Tax Reduction and are struggling with the rest of your bill, you can apply for a discretionary Hardship Payment.

Empty homes are charged from day one

Redbridge gives no discount for most empty homes, even ones empty for only a few days. If you buy a home on 1 March and move in on 19 May, you pay from 1 March. After a year empty and unfurnished, the bill doubles. It triples after five years and quadruples after ten, and the period runs on through changes of owner. A home that cannot be lived in only stops being charged if the Valuation Office Agency removes it from the list as derelict or being rebuilt. Furnished second homes, including holiday homes, have paid double since 1 April 2025, so a Band D second home costs £4,589.16 in 2026/27.

Paying, and local exemptions

If you do not pay by Direct Debit, payments are due by the 4th of each month, normally over 10 months, but you can apply online to spread them over 12. Care leavers from Redbridge are exempt until they turn 25. Out of a Band D bill of £2,294.58, £510.51 goes to the Greater London Authority.
