Discounts and reductions
- Living alone: 25% off — a Band C bill in Bexley drops from £2,103.43 to £1,577.57.
- Council Tax Reduction: Bexley runs its own scheme for people on low incomes or benefits — rules differ from council to council in England.
- Disregards and exemptions: full-time students, student halls, some carers and people with a severe mental impairment are not counted; all-student homes pay nothing.
- Disabled Band Reduction: if your home has been adapted for a disabled person you may be billed one band lower (Band A homes get a reduction of 1/9 of Band D).
Bexley's 4.8% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.
Bexley's banded Council Tax Reduction: up to 75%
Since 1 April 2025, working-age claimants in Bexley can get up to 75% off. The council first takes away your "applicable amount", the government's figure for basic living costs, which is higher if you have a partner, children or a disability. It also ignores certain income. What is left decides your band:
- People on Income Support, income-based JSA, income-related ESA, or Universal Credit with no other income go straight into the 75% band.
- Working-age claims can be backdated by one month, and pension-age claims by three months, if you show good cause.
- The council says it spends over £14 million a year on Council Tax Reduction.
