Discounts and reductions
- Living alone: 25% off — a Band A bill in Erewash drops from £1,573.76 to £1,180.32.
- Council Tax Reduction: Erewash runs its own scheme for people on low incomes or benefits — rules differ from council to council in England.
- Disregards and exemptions: full-time students, student halls, some carers and people with a severe mental impairment are not counted; all-student homes pay nothing.
- Disabled Band Reduction: if your home has been adapted for a disabled person you may be billed one band lower (Band A homes get a reduction of 1/9 of Band D).
Erewash's 4.5% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.
Erewash froze its share for 2026/27
Erewash Borough Council kept its own Band D charge at £220.22 for 2026/27, a 0% change. The rise on bills in Ilkeston, Long Eaton and the surrounding parishes came from the other bodies. Derbyshire County Council went up 4.90% to £1,708.99, the Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner 5.11% to £308.60, and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Authority 5.35% to £98.41.
Before parish precepts, the combined Band D figure is £2,336.22, which the council says is up 4.46% from £2,236.39. Derbyshire County Council receives 73.15% of that and Erewash Borough Council 9.43%. Parish precepts are added on top for homes in parished areas, which is why the area average used on this page differs slightly.
Empty homes, second homes and support
Erewash introduced a 100% second-homes premium from 1 April 2026, so a furnished home that is not anyone's main residence now pays double: £3,672.11 on a Band B home. The council says the premium does not apply to a long-term furnished let between residential tenancies, as long as it will next be let to a tenant as their main home. Empty, unfurnished homes pay 200% after one year, 300% after five and 400% after ten. Buyers inherit the premium if the home was already long-term empty, and the "marketed for sale" exception does not restart if a home is taken off the market and relisted.
Erewash uses the same £16,000 Council Tax Support savings limit for working-age claimants as for pensioners. Erewash also works with Welfare Together, a partner that contacts households the council thinks may be financially vulnerable and helps them claim benefits, hardship grants and Crisis and Resilience Fund payments.
Almost 70% of Erewash payers use direct debit, with a choice of the 1st, 15th or 25th of the month, over 10 or 12 instalments. Other payments must reach your account by the 1st. Paying late more than twice can cost you the right to pay by instalments.
