Discounts and reductions
- Living alone: 25% off — a Band B bill in South Derbyshire drops from £1,819.70 to £1,364.77.
- Council Tax Reduction: South Derbyshire runs its own scheme for people on low incomes or benefits — rules differ from council to council in England.
- Disregards and exemptions: full-time students, student halls, some carers and people with a severe mental impairment are not counted; all-student homes pay nothing.
- Disabled Band Reduction: if your home has been adapted for a disabled person you may be billed one band lower (Band A homes get a reduction of 1/9 of Band D).
South Derbyshire's 4.8% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.
South Derbyshire's 10-band Council Tax Reduction scheme
South Derbyshire District Council adopted a new working-age Council Tax Reduction scheme for 2026/27. The council compares your weekly income with a set amount for living expenses, made up of allowances for you, any partner and children, plus extra amounts such as for disability. The more your income is above that amount, the less help you get. If your income is no more than £5 a week above it, you still get 100%.
Example: if your income is £40 a week above your living-expenses amount, you are in Band 4 and get 66% off. On a Band B home (£1,819.70 in 2026/27) that leaves £618.70 to pay for the year.
- Awards worth less than £1 a week are not paid.
- The council removed the two-child limit for working-age claimants from April 2026, so every child in the household now counts towards the living-expenses amount.
- Working-age claims can be backdated up to 6 months if you had a good reason for not claiming sooner.
- Working-age claimants with savings over £6,000 are treated as having £1 a week of income for every £250 above that. Above £16,000 you get no reduction.
| Weekly income above living-expenses amount | Reduction |
|---|---|
| £0 to £5 | 100% |
| £5.01 to £20 | 90% |
| £20.01 to £35 | 78% |
| £35.01 to £50 | 66% |
| £50.01 to £65 | 54% |
| £65.01 to £80 | 42% |
| £80.01 to £95 | 30% |
| £95.01 to £110 | 18% |
| £110.01 to £140 | 10% |
Empty and second homes in South Derbyshire
An empty, unfurnished home in South Derbyshire pays nothing for its first three months. A change of owner does not restart the three months. After that, the full charge is due. From 1 April 2026 the 100% long-term empty premium starts after one year instead of two. A Band D home empty for 13 months now pays £4,679.22. Homes empty for 5 years pay three times the normal bill, and homes empty for 10 years pay four times.
The council also introduced a second homes premium from 1 April 2026. It says the premium applies to second homes that have been unoccupied for two years or more. The council adds that a holiday home rented out for 140 days or more a year may need to be assessed for business rates instead of council tax.
