Discounts and reductions
- Living alone: 25% off — a Band C bill in Lambeth drops from £1,819.65 to £1,364.74.
- Council Tax Reduction: Lambeth runs its own scheme for people on low incomes or benefits — rules differ from council to council in England.
- Disregards and exemptions: full-time students, student halls, some carers and people with a severe mental impairment are not counted; all-student homes pay nothing.
- Disabled Band Reduction: if your home has been adapted for a disabled person you may be billed one band lower (Band A homes get a reduction of 1/9 of Band D).
Lambeth's 4.8% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.
Lambeth's new banded support scheme
After a public consultation, Lambeth brought in a simpler banded Council Tax Support scheme for all working-age residents on 1 April 2026. Welfare benefits no longer affect the award. Only earnings, the number of children and other adults in the home count. A household with no earnings gets 73.5% off. Households in work are banded as follows:
| Weekly net earnings (no children) | Off your bill | Band C bill after support 2026/27 |
|---|---|---|
| £0 | 73.5% | £482.21 |
| £0.01 to £100 | 55% | £818.84 |
| £100.01 to £200 | 45% | £1,000.81 |
| £200.01 to £300 | 30% | £1,273.76 |
| £300.01 to £380 | 15% | £1,546.71 |
Other Lambeth rules
- Each child raises the earnings limits by £30, up to five or more children. With one child, 55% applies up to £130 a week. Net earnings are counted after tax, National Insurance and half of any pension contributions.
- Other adults in the home cut support by £10 a week each if they are not working, or £16 a week if they are working.
- Pensioners can still get up to 100%. The savings limit is £10,000 for working-age claimants and £16,000 for pensioners.
- Working-age claimants who still struggle can apply for a Discretionary Council Tax Support Hardship Payment. Others can request a Section 13A discretionary reduction.
- Lambeth gives no discount on any empty property. Second homes have paid 200% since April 2025, including short-term lets such as Airbnbs and serviced apartments, until they meet the business rates test (available for 140 nights and actually let for 70).
- You can choose any day of the month for direct debit. Setup can take up to 10 days.
