Discounts and reductions

Walsall's 5.2% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Walsall's Council Tax Reduction, and the 2026 consultation

Walsall Council's working-age Council Tax Reduction covers up to 75% of the bill. Pension-age claimants and care leavers can get up to 100%. Since April 2022 the working-age scheme has used income bands, which give 75%, 65%, 55%, 45% or 25% off depending on weekly household income and size. The council's own example: a couple with one child and £254 a week of income gets 55% off.

On 16 September 2026 Walsall's Cabinet approved a public consultation, open from 24 September to 21 October 2026, on changing the scheme. The proposal keeps the 75% maximum, but would count only earned income and bring in a flat £10 a week deduction for each non-dependant. At today's rates, a 75% award on a Band A home (52,450 homes, the most common band) leaves £437.91 a year to pay.

  • Working-age claimants with £6,000 or more in savings cannot claim. The pension-age limit is £16,000, unless you get guaranteed Pension Credit.
  • People with no recourse to public funds cannot claim.

Long-term empty homes pay a 100% premium after one year, 200% after five years and 300% after ten, whoever owns them. Since April 2025, furnished homes that are nobody's main home pay double: £5,254.96 at Band D in 2026/27.
