Discounts and reductions
- Living alone: 25% off — a Band B bill in North Warwickshire drops from £1,969.41 to £1,477.06.
- Council Tax Reduction: North Warwickshire runs its own scheme for people on low incomes or benefits — rules differ from council to council in England.
- Disregards and exemptions: full-time students, student halls, some carers and people with a severe mental impairment are not counted; all-student homes pay nothing.
- Disabled Band Reduction: if your home has been adapted for a disabled person you may be billed one band lower (Band A homes get a reduction of 1/9 of Band D).
North Warwickshire's 4.1% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.
Council Tax Support in North Warwickshire: 91.5% now, up to 100% proposed for 2027
Under North Warwickshire Borough Council's current working-age scheme, every claimant pays at least 8.5% of their bill, so the most support anyone of working age can get is 91.5%. Pensioners can still get up to 100%. About 2,000 working-age residents in the borough get Council Tax Support.
Worked example: a Band B home (the most common band here) costs £1,969.41 in 2026/27. A working-age household on maximum support still pays £167.40, about £16.74 a month over 10 instalments. In Band A the minimum is £143.49.
- Proposed change: the council is consulting on a simpler income-banded scheme from 1 April 2027. It would let working-age claimants get up to 100% off again. The consultation closes at 5pm on 5 November 2026, and the pension-age scheme would not change.
- Hardship payments: if you get Council Tax Support and are in exceptional financial hardship, you can apply for a short-term discretionary top-up, credited to your council tax account. It will not cover shortfalls caused by a DWP sanction for turning down work or training.
Paying in North Warwickshire, including weekly direct debits
Bills are paid in 10 or 12 monthly instalments, due on the 1st unless you pay by direct debit. Direct debit dates are the 1st, 5th, 15th or 25th of the month, or weekly on a Friday. To switch to 12 instalments or set up a direct debit, phone the billing team.
North Warwickshire's local empty-property rules
When the national empty-property exemptions were abolished in 2013, North Warwickshire held an extraordinary council meeting on 17 January 2013 to set its own rules. These included a 14-day 100% discount for newly empty homes and a 25% discount for homes needing major repairs. The council also brought in its first long-term empty premium. The major-works discount still applies for up to 12 months from when the home became empty and unfurnished, and it ends after 12 months even if the work continues. It covers work on the structure, such as roof structure repairs or gutting a property back to brick. It does not cover rewiring, damp-proofing, replastering, drainage, or refurbishment between tenancies. The council usually inspects before deciding.
The council's empty-property FAQ still describes the premium rules set in 2013. Confirm the current premium and any second-homes charge with the council tax team before you budget for an empty home. The premium follows the property, not the owner, so a change of owner does not reset it.
