Where's My State Tax Refund? Official Refund Status Tools for Every State

Updated 2026-10-03 Β· Reviewed against official government sources

Every state that has an income tax runs its own refund tracker, separate from the IRS "Where's My Refund?" tool. The IRS tool can't see your state refund, and your state can't see your federal one. Below is the official link for each state, taken from the state revenue department's own website, along with the processing time the state publishes. Most states pay e-filed refunds with direct deposit within 2–6 weeks. Paper returns usually take 8–12 weeks or longer.

What you need before you check

  • Your Social Security number or ITIN (the primary filer's, if you filed jointly).
  • The exact refund amount in whole dollars, from your state return, not your federal one.
  • In some states, the tax year and your filing status, or a ZIP code or letter ID.
  • Wait at least a few days after your e-file is accepted. Most trackers don't show a return until it's been loaded.

Official state refund trackers and typical processing times

The times below are what each state says on its own site for the 2026 filing season, usually measured from when the state accepts an e-filed return. If your state's site gives only a "call us after" window, that's what we show. All links go to official state government domains.

Popular lookups: NC, WI, NJ, PA, IL and Michigan

  • Where's my refund NC: use the North Carolina DOR tool at ncdor.gov/wheres-my-refund. You need your SSN and the exact refund amount. E-filed refunds usually arrive in 3–6 weeks.
  • Where's my refund WI: Wisconsin's tool asks for your SSN, the tax year and the refund amount. Most e-filed refunds with direct deposit arrive in under 3 weeks, but fraud safeguards can hold some for up to 12 weeks.
  • Where's my refund NJ: New Jersey's checker needs your SSN and the exact refund amount. Expect 4+ weeks for e-file and at least 12 weeks for paper.
  • Where's my refund PA: use myPATH (the "Where's My Refund?" link on pa.gov). Pennsylvania doesn't publish a standard timeframe.
  • Where's my refund IL: MyTax Illinois shows status. E-filed refunds typically go out about 4 weeks after filing.
  • Michigan refund status: use "Where's My Refund?" on michigan.gov/taxes/iit. Most refunds arrive 4–6 weeks after the e-file is accepted.

Why your state refund is late

  • Identity verification: many states hold a return until you confirm your identity by letter or quiz. Watch your mail and respond quickly.
  • Math or withholding mismatch: if your W-2 state withholding doesn't match what the state received from your employer, the refund is adjusted or held.
  • Offsets: refunds can be reduced to pay back taxes, child support, unemployment overpayments or other state debts. You'll get a notice explaining the change.
  • Paper filing or paper checks add weeks. E-file with direct deposit is fastest in every state.
  • Mid-year rate cuts: in states that cut 2026 rates retroactively (Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Utah and West Virginia), expect larger refunds next spring. Processing times aren't affected.

States with no state refund to track

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming don't tax wages, so there's no state income tax refund to track. Washington residents who overpaid capital gains tax can check through My DOR. For your federal refund, use the IRS "Where's My Refund?" tool at irs.gov/refunds.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check my state refund on the IRS website?

No. The IRS tool shows only federal refunds. Use your state revenue department's tracker from the table above.

How long does a state tax refund take?

Most states pay e-filed, direct-deposit refunds in 2–6 weeks. Paper returns usually take 8–12 weeks or longer. Some states, like Utah, ask you to allow up to 120 days.

Why does my state say my return isn't found?

It may not be loaded yet (give it a few days after acceptance), or the refund amount or SSN you entered doesn't exactly match the return. Use whole dollars from your state return.

Is my state refund taxable on my federal return?

Only if you itemized deductions and deducted state income tax the year before, and then only to the extent you got a tax benefit. The state usually sends Form 1099-G.

Who do I call if my refund is very late?

Your state's taxpayer service line, listed on the same refund page. Most states ask you to wait until their published processing window has passed before calling.
