How to convert hourly pay to a salary (and back)
A full-time US job is counted as 40 hours a week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours a year. That single number does all the work:
- Hourly → yearly: multiply the hourly rate by 2,080. $25 an hour × 2,080 = $52,000 a year.
- Yearly → hourly: divide the salary by 2,080. $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.
- Quick mental math: double the hourly rate and add three zeros. $20/hour ≈ $40,000 a year (exactly $41,600). Halve a salary and drop three zeros to go the other way.
- Monthly: hourly × 2,080 ÷ 12, or hourly × 173.33. Don't multiply a weekly figure by 4 — a month averages 4.33 weeks.
- Bi-weekly: hourly × 80. There are 26 bi-weekly paydays a year, so two months each year have three paychecks.
In 2026 there are 261 weekdays, or 2,088 working hours, so an hourly worker paid for every weekday earns slightly more than the 2,080-hour figure. Salaried staff are paid the same either way.

How much of each hour do you keep?
Federal tax is progressive, so the share you keep falls as pay rises — but a raise never lowers your take-home pay. The chart shows gross vs after-tax hourly pay for a single filer with no state income tax.
- Gross per hour
- Take-home per hour
The same salary in different states
Where you live changes take-home pay more than most people expect. A $60,000 salary ($28.85 an hour) leaves $50,390 in Texas but $45,553 in Oregon — $4,837 a year apart. Use the state option in the calculator above, or the paycheck calculator for every state and city.
Part-time, unpaid time off and overtime
- Part-time: use your real weekly hours. $20 an hour at 25 hours a week is $26,000 a year, not $41,600.
- Unpaid weeks: hourly workers without paid time off should reduce the weeks. Two unpaid weeks turn $25/hour into $50,000 instead of $52,000.
- Paid holidays and PTO don't change a salary — they are already inside the 2,080 hours.
- Overtime: non-exempt workers earn 1.5× their rate above 40 hours a week. Five overtime hours a week at $25 adds $9,750 a year, and under the 2026 rules the extra half-time premium is deductible from federal income tax up to $12,500 — see the no tax on overtime calculator.
- Comparing a job offer: a salaried job paying $55,000 with benefits can beat a $28/hour contract ($58,240) once you add health insurance, 401(k) match and the employer half of FICA that contractors pay themselves.
What comes out of your pay
- Federal income tax: 2026 brackets from 10% to 37% after the $16,100 standard deduction (single).
- Social Security: 6.2% of wages up to $184,500.
- Medicare: 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% above $200,000.
- State and local income tax: zero in nine states, flat or progressive elsewhere, plus city taxes in places like New York City and Philadelphia.
For a full paycheck with 401(k), health premiums, dependents and pay frequency, use the hourly paycheck calculator or the salary paycheck calculator.
