Which calculator answers your question

Most tax questions are really one of a handful: how much will I take home, how much will I owe or get back, what will this one-off payment cost me in tax, or how does one place compare with another. Find your question below and the tool that answers it.

Employees: start with the paycheck

For anyone paid through payroll, the paycheck calculator is the most complete tool. It combines federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, state income tax, state payroll programs and local wage taxes, and lets you add 401(k) contributions, pre-tax health premiums, children, overtime and tips. The specialized federal tools are useful for one piece of the picture — the federal income tax calculator for the annual bill, the refund estimator for what happens at filing time, the bracket calculator to understand your marginal rate.

If your hours change from week to week, use the hourly paycheck calculator with your average weekly hours, and the no tax on overtime calculator to see what the new deduction is worth at filing time.

Self-employed, investors and retirees

If nobody withholds tax from your income, you need to estimate it yourself. The self-employment tax calculator adds 15.3% self-employment tax to income tax and divides the total into quarterly estimated payments. The capital gains calculator handles stock, fund, crypto and property sales at the 0%, 15% and 20% long-term rates or ordinary rates for short-term gains, with the 3.8% net investment income tax where it applies. The 401(k) withdrawal calculator shows income tax and the 10% additional tax on early withdrawals, which matters to anyone taking money out before 59½.

One-off payments: bonuses, prizes and raises

Lump sums are where withholding and actual tax differ the most. A bonus is usually withheld at a flat 22% and lottery winnings at 24%, but the real tax depends on your bracket. The bonus and lottery calculators show both numbers so you can see whether to expect money back or a bill. The pay raise calculator works the other way: it shows the extra take-home from a permanent increase, per paycheck.

Assumptions shared by every tool

  • All federal figures are for the 2026 tax year unless a tool lets you choose 2025.
  • The standard deduction is assumed. If you itemize, your income tax will be lower than shown.
  • Results are annual estimates; per-paycheck amounts are the annual figure divided evenly.
  • Nothing you enter leaves your browser, and no tool asks for your name, Social Security number or employer.

Frequently asked questions

Which calculator should I use for my first job?

The paycheck calculator for your state. It shows exactly what comes out of each check and why.

I have a W-2 job and a side gig. Which tool fits?

Use the paycheck calculator for the job and the self-employment tax calculator for the side gig’s profit. Your W-2 wages count toward the Social Security wage base first, which can reduce self-employment tax on the side income.

Do the tools include state tax?

Most do: the paycheck, federal and state income tax, self-employment, capital gains, bonus, lottery, raise and 401(k) withdrawal tools let you pick a state. The bracket, refund, overtime and tips tools cover federal tax only.

Is there a UK version of these tools?

Yes. The UK section has take-home pay, Income Tax, National Insurance, self-employed and limited company calculators for 2026/27.
