How the Canada Child Benefit is calculated

The CCB is the maximum per child ($8,157 under 6, $6,883 aged 6 to 17 for July 2026 – June 2027) minus an income reduction. The reduction is a percentage of adjusted family net income (AFNI) above $38,237: 7.0% for one child, 13.5% for two, 19.0% for three and 23.0% for four or more. Above $82,847 the full first band is deducted, plus 3.2%, 5.7%, 8.0% or 9.5% of the income above that.

Worked example: a family with one child under 6, one aged 8 and $60,000 of AFNI gets $12,102 a year ($1,008.50 a month), up from $11,706 in July 2025 – June 2026, because the amounts and thresholds are indexed each July. A family with two children aged 6 to 17 and $120,000 of AFNI still gets $5,626. With one child aged 6 to 17, the benefit only reaches zero at about $200,356 of family income.

What counts as adjusted family net income

AFNI is your net income from line 23600 plus your spouse's or common-law partner's line 23600, minus any Universal Child Care Benefit and registered disability savings plan income received, plus any of those amounts repaid. It uses the previous year's returns, so 2025 income sets the payments from July 2026 to June 2027.

Because it is net income, deductions such as RRSP contributions, child care expenses and union dues lower it, and each dollar of deduction can increase the CCB for the following year. An RRSP deduction for a two-child family in the first phase-out band raises the next year's CCB by 13.5 cents per dollar, on top of the income tax saved.

CCB payment dates for 2026

The CRA pays the CCB monthly, usually on the 20th. The 2026 dates are listed below. The CRA asks you to wait 5 working days after a payment date before contacting it about a missing payment.

  • January 20, February 20, March 20, April 20 and May 20, 2026
  • June 19, 2026
  • July 20, 2026 (first payment of the new benefit year)
  • August 20, 2026
  • September 18, 2026
  • October 20 and November 20, 2026
  • December 11, 2026

Child Disability Benefit

If your child is eligible for the disability tax credit, the CRA automatically adds the Child Disability Benefit to your CCB: up to $3,480 a year ($290 a month) per eligible child for July 2026 to June 2027.

Approval comes through Form T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate, completed by a medical practitioner and sent to the CRA. You do not apply for the Child Disability Benefit separately: once the child is approved and you receive the CCB for them, the CRA calculates it and adds it to your monthly payment.

Provincial child benefits paid with the CCB

The calculator above shows the federal benefit only. According to the CRA, your CCB payment may include related provincial and territorial programs, which use the same family net income; Quebec runs its own program. Four examples:

  • Ontario Child Benefit (July 2026 – June 2027): up to $146.66 a month per child under 18 (about $1,760 a year), delivered with the CCB in a single monthly payment and reduced once adjusted family net income passes $26,865.
  • B.C. Family Benefit (July 2026 – June 2027): up to $1,750 for the first child, $1,100 for the second and $900 for each additional child at family income under $30,176. Between $30,176 and $96,562 the benefit is reduced but not below $775, $750 and $725; above $96,562 it falls by 4% of the excess until it reaches zero.
  • Alberta Child and Family Benefit (July 2026 – June 2027): a base component of up to $1,529 for one child (up to $3,821 for four or more), plus a working component of up to $782 for one child when family employment income exceeds $2,760. It is paid quarterly; the 2026 dates are February 27, May 27, August 27 and November 27.
  • Quebec: the Family Allowance is not administered by the CRA. Retraite Québec pays it, and declaring a birth to the Directeur de l'état civil registers the child automatically.

Who can get the CCB and how to apply

You must live with a child under 18, be primarily responsible for their care, and be a resident of Canada for tax purposes. You or your spouse must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months and holds a valid permit in the 19th month, or registered under the Indian Act. The CRA presumes the female parent in the home is primarily responsible and should apply. If the other parent is, a signed letter from her is needed.

In shared custody, where the child lives with each parent 40% to 60% of the time, each parent gets 50% of the amount they would get with full custody, based on their own household income. Apply when you register a newborn's birth (Automated Benefits Application, not available in Nunavut), through your CRA account, or by mailing Form RC66. If the child started living with you more than 11 months ago, you must mail Form RC66 with proof of residency, status and primary care.

Frequently asked questions

When does the CCB reduce?

Above $38,237 of adjusted family net income, at a rate that depends on the number of children, with a second, lower reduction rate above $82,847.

When does the CCB increase each year?

In July. The July 2026 – June 2027 amounts ($8,157 under 6 and $6,883 aged 6 to 17) took effect with the July 20, 2026 payment, along with your new family income from your 2025 returns.

Do both parents have to file a tax return to get the CCB?

Yes, if you have a spouse or common-law partner. The CRA decides your entitlement when you file, and adjusted family net income adds both partners' line 23600 amounts, so it cannot work out the benefit for July without both returns.

Is the Canada child benefit taxable?

No. The CRA says CCB payments, including the Child Disability Benefit, are not taxable and do not have to be reported on your tax return.

What happens to the CCB when a child turns 6?

The per-child maximum drops from $8,157 to $6,883 once the child turns 6. The CCB is only paid for children under 18.

Does a separation change my CCB?

Yes. Tell the CRA about the change in marital status as soon as possible. After the change, your benefit is based on your own net income rather than combined family income.
