Discounts and reductions

Ashfield's 4.1% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Ashfield District Council added £6.07 at Band D

Ashfield District Council's own Band D charge went from £207.13 to £213.20 in 2026/27, an increase of £6.07. The council publishes a line-by-line reconciliation of what moved the figure. A higher revenue support grant took £178.70 off Band D. Lower retained business rates added £81.64, the line labelled "decrease in transfer to reserves" added £65.89 and the "net decrease in the cost of service" line added £103.86. Nottinghamshire County Council, the police, the fire authority and parish councils set the rest of the bill.

Terminal illness relief from April 2026

Since 1 April 2026 Ashfield gives a 100% council tax reduction to households on Council Tax Support where the bill payer's partner or a family member living with them is terminally ill. The named person must have a progressive disease with a life expectancy of less than 12 months, confirmed on a clinician-completed SR1 form. The relief starts from the SR1 date (or 1 April 2026 if the form is older). It runs to the end of the financial year in which the person dies, plus April of the next year if the death is in March. It continues if the person lives beyond 12 months. A GP, healthcare worker or support staff member can apply on the person's behalf by sending in the SR1.

Care leavers get up to 100% off until age 25. They do not have to apply, because Ashfield works with Nottinghamshire County Council to find who is entitled and applies the discount itself.

A sliding scale for empty homes

Ashfield still gives a short discount on newly empty homes. The clock starts when the home becomes empty and unfurnished, not when it changes owner:

  • Band A is used because it is Ashfield's most common band (30,350 homes).
  • Furnished second homes and holiday homes get no discount. Uninhabitable homes pay 100%, but the premium may not be charged, so contact the council.
  • Direct debit dates are the 1st, 10th or 20th of the month, over 10 or 12 instalments. Not reporting a change that affects a discount can lead to a £70 fine.
