Discounts and reductions

Gedling's 4.1% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Gedling’s own share brings in about £8 million a year, which the council says is £67.23 per resident. That compares with £661.25 per resident for the county council and £104.42 for the police. Parish precepts make bills differ across the borough: in 2026/27 a Band D home in Bestwood Village pays £2,624.05, and one in Burton Joyce £2,749.95.

Empty homes still get a short discount in Gedling

Gedling keeps a stepped discount for newly empty homes. An empty, unfurnished home pays nothing for its first month and gets 25% off for the next five months. From six months the full charge applies, and after a year a premium is added. A home that is uninhabitable because of major repairs gets 25% off for its first 12 months.

  • Second homes and furnished empty homes have paid a 100% premium since 1 April 2025 (200% in total).
  • Gedling says some second homes can still get a 50% discount instead: homes kept by people who must live in job-related accommodation (not homes rented for convenience), caravan pitches and boat moorings, and homes whose planning conditions stop them being lived in for more than 28 days a year.
  • Owners who want help selling or letting a long-term empty home can contact the council’s Empty Homes Officer.
