Broxtowe's 2026/27 budget

Broxtowe Borough Council approved its 2026/27 budget on 4 March 2026. It raised its own share of the bill by 2.94%, which it says adds £5.68 a year to a Band D home for borough services. The council said it closed a projected £2 million budget gap by managing spending and drawing on reserves, with no compulsory job losses or service cuts.

The borough keeps only about £199.34 of the Band D bill. Nottinghamshire County Council takes £1,970.13, so the county's decision moves your bill far more than Broxtowe's own.

Empty homes, second homes and paying in Broxtowe

An empty, unfurnished home that can be lived in gets a 25% discount for up to six months. A home that cannot be lived in because of major repairs or structural work can get a discount for up to 12 months. To apply, you email the council date-stamped photos and a room-by-room account of the work.

Since 1 April 2025 a home empty for 1 to 5 years pays double, 5 to 10 years pays three times the bill, and over 10 years pays four times. Second homes (furnished, with nobody living there as their main home) have paid a 100% levy since 1 April 2026. On an average Band D home that is £5,236.42 a year.

The default is 10 monthly instalments from April to January. You can ask for 12 monthly instalments, one payment on 1 April, or two payments on 1 April and 1 September. Direct debit can be taken on the 1st, 6th, 15th or 28th of the month. Other payment methods are due on the 1st.

  • Council Tax Support: when the government cut its funding for council tax help in 2013, Broxtowe chose to cover the cut itself rather than pass it on to vulnerable and low-income households. You apply online through the council.
  • Terminal illness relief: since 1 April 2026, households getting Local Council Tax Support that include someone with a life expectancy under 12 months can get up to 100% of the bill covered.
  • Broxtowe also offers discretionary relief for care leavers.
