Discounts and reductions
- Living alone: 25% off — a Band C bill in Rushcliffe drops from £2,349.57 to £1,762.18.
- Council Tax Reduction: Rushcliffe runs its own scheme for people on low incomes or benefits — rules differ from council to council in England.
- Disregards and exemptions: full-time students, student halls, some carers and people with a severe mental impairment are not counted; all-student homes pay nothing.
- Disabled Band Reduction: if your home has been adapted for a disabled person you may be billed one band lower (Band A homes get a reduction of 1/9 of Band D).
Rushcliffe's 4.4% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.
Rushcliffe froze its share for 2026/27
Rushcliffe Borough Council did not increase its own part of the bill this year. It stays at £161.77 at Band D, or £107.85 at Band A. The council says this saves a Band D household £4.58 compared with the most it could have raised. It will cost the council about £222,000 next year and about £1.2 million over five years, which it says it can afford without cutting services while still balancing its budget over the next five years. It says the aim is to give residents some breathing room while food, energy and rent costs remain high.
The borough’s share is just over 6% of the total bill, so the freeze makes little difference to what you pay. Your bill still rises because of Nottinghamshire County Council (£1,970.13 at Band D), the police (£311.10) and the fire authority (£102.21). The borough-wide average Band D bill, including the average parish precept, is £2,643.27.
Second homes and empty homes
- Second homes: since 1 April 2025 the 100% premium has applied only once a home has been a second home for more than 12 months. So a Band E second home pays £3,230.66 in its first year and £6,461.33 a year after that, at the average parish rate.
- Unfurnished homes get 50% off for their first four weeks. After that the home must be lived in for at least six weeks before the discount can be given again.
- Long-term empty homes pay a 100% premium after 12 months, 200% after five years and 300% after ten.
- The council lists which works make a home uninhabitable for the 12-month premium exception, such as major roof, foundation or structural wall repairs, or gutting the property. Replacing a kitchen, bathroom, plumbing or heating does not count.
- Homes your employer requires you to live away from can get 50% off.
Paying, and Council Tax Reduction
Monthly Direct Debits can be taken on the 1st, 7th, 14th or 24th, over 10 or 12 months. You can also pay twice a year by Direct Debit, on 1 April and 1 September. The council no longer takes cash. To pay in cash, take your bill to a Post Office or Allpay outlet. Working-age Council Tax Reduction is set out in Rushcliffe’s own 2026–27 scheme document. The council notes that the government cut funding for the local scheme that replaced Council Tax Benefit by 13.4%. Second Adult Rebate is also available if you share your home with another adult on a low income.
