On 8 July 2025, councillors agreed that homes empty for five years or more will see their premium rise 25 points each April until it reaches 300%: 225% in April 2026, 250% in 2027, 275% in 2028 and 300% in 2029. The total bill for those homes reaches four times the normal charge, about £9,356.12 at today's Band D.
From 1 April 2026 the council also offers two premium reliefs to help new owners bring long-empty homes back into use: 3 months for general renovation and 6 months for major renovation. For the 6-month relief, you must have bought the home within the last 6 months, it must have been empty and unfurnished for at least 12 months before you bought it, and you must plan to live in it once the work is done. Second homes and holiday lets cannot get it. The council's own counts show 600 long-term empty homes on 1 April 2026, up from 570 a year earlier, of which 202 had been empty for over 5 years. Second homes fell slightly to 418.
