Discounts and reductions

Nuneaton and Bedworth's 4.3% rise compares with an England average of 4.9%. Councils responsible for social care can raise their own share by up to 4.99% without a referendum, districts by under 3% or £5, and police and fire bodies by fixed cash amounts — so the area total can move by a different percentage.

Empty homes premiums were reversed in March 2026

Nuneaton and Bedworth has had an unusual couple of years on empty homes. From 1 April 2025 it charged the stepped premiums the law allows: an extra 100% after one year, 200% after five years and 300% after ten. At a full council meeting on 18 March 2026, those charges were revoked with immediate effect and the borough went back to its previous rule. That rule is a single 100% premium on homes empty and unfurnished for more than two years.

The council says it would correct accounts that had been wrongly charged by 31 March 2026. If you pay by Direct Debit, any credit is refunded automatically. Otherwise, email your bank details to the billing team. For 2026/27, a Band B home empty for three years pays £3,892.25, which is double the normal charge. A home empty for 11 years pays the same, not four times.

The premium stays with the property, so if you buy a home that has already been empty for two years, you pay it from the day you take over until someone moves in. The borough gives no exemption for homes needing structural repair.

Second homes premium starts in 2026–27

The borough did not join the councils that brought in a second homes premium in April 2025. It made its decision with the required 12 months’ notice, so the 100% premium on furnished homes with no main resident began on 1 April 2026. A Band C second home pays £4,448.28 this year instead of £2,224.14. Unlike the empty homes premium, there is no waiting period before it applies.

Local Council Tax Support: everyone of working age pays 15%

Under the borough's Council Tax Reduction scheme, working-age claimants receive at most 85% of their bill, so everyone pays at least 15%. For 2026/27 the minimum yearly payment is £250.22 in Band A, the borough’s most common band with 21,050 homes, and £291.92 in Band B. Apart from that cap, the scheme is still means-tested in the traditional way. It keeps the extra premiums for families with children, disabled people and carers, and fully ignores war disablement and war widows’ pensions.

If you or your partner start work, support continues for four weeks. Deductions are made for other adults living with you, using the government’s rates. Late claims can be backdated if you show good cause.

Paying your bill

Monthly Direct Debits are taken on the 1st, 16th or 28th. Weekly, fortnightly and four-weekly Direct Debits are also available, and these are always taken on a Monday. According to the borough's own split, about 76% of your bill goes to Warwickshire County Council, 13% to the Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner and 11% to the borough. The borough's Band D share is £279.59.
