Idaho withholding and Form ID W-4

Idaho has its own withholding certificate, Form ID W-4. You choose one of three statuses: A (single, including head of household and single people with multiple jobs), B (married filing jointly with one job and a spouse who does not work, or a qualifying surviving spouse) or C (married, but withhold at the single rate, used when both spouses work or someone has multiple jobs, and for married filing separately). The back of the form helps you work out Idaho allowances and any extra amount to withhold.

The Idaho State Tax Commission recommends updating your ID W-4 at least once a year, and after any life change, alongside your federal W-4.

How the 2026 Idaho tables work

The 2026 percentage-method tables are simple: no Idaho tax is withheld on the first $16,100 of annual wages for single workers ($32,200 for married workers), and 5.3% is withheld on everything above that. The thresholds match the federal standard deduction.

  • Example: a single worker on $55,000 has ($55,000 − $16,100) × 5.3% = $2,062 withheld for the year, about $79 per bi-weekly check.
  • The tables used to subtract an allowance for the Idaho Child Tax Credit. That credit has expired, so the allowance is now zero and parents may see slightly higher Idaho withholding than in past years.

Full example paycheck on $55,000

Single filer, bi-weekly, no pre-tax deductions:

  • The calculator's annual Idaho estimate ($1,807) is a little lower than the withholding tables ($2,062) because the return also applies a 0% band to the first slice of taxable income. That difference usually comes back as a refund.
  • Idaho has no local income taxes, no state disability insurance and no employee-paid unemployment tax.

Working in Idaho while living elsewhere

Nonresidents owe Idaho tax on Idaho-source income, which includes wages for work physically done in Idaho, and must file Form 43 once their Idaho-source gross income is more than $2,500. Commuters from Washington should expect Idaho withholding on Idaho work. Residents of other income-tax states who work in Idaho pay Idaho on those wages and usually claim a credit on their home-state return.
