What this calculator simplifies

How Iowa withholding works in 2026

Iowa withholds income tax at its flat 3.8% rate after subtracting a deduction based on the marital status on your IA W-4 and any allowance dollars you claim. The 2026 IA W-4 mirrors the federal standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married, $24,150 head of household), so Iowa withholding now lines up closely with what you will actually owe.

Iowa still recognizes older forms. If the IA W-4 your employer has on file is from 2023 or earlier, payroll uses a separate deduction table and counts each allowance as $40. If your W-4 dates from before Iowa moved to a flat tax, filing a new one is the easiest way to make your withholding match your bill.

Example: a $52,000 salary in Iowa

A single worker earning $52,000 and paid every two weeks takes home about $1,640 per check in 2026 before any school district surtax. Iowa income tax is about $51 per check, federal income tax $156, and Social Security plus Medicare $153.

Iowa has no state disability or paid family leave payroll tax deducted from employees, so those four lines are the whole story for most workers.

School district surtax: the local tax on Iowa income

Most Iowa school districts add an income surtax, and it is a percentage of your Iowa income tax, not of your income. A 5% surtax on a $1,500 Iowa tax bill adds $75. The surtax is based on your school district of residence and is settled on your IA 1040.

Rates vary widely, and several of the largest districts charge nothing. Residents of Appanoose, Cass, Pocahontas, Sac, Shelby and Winnebago counties also pay a 1% local option surtax included in their district rate.

Working in Illinois or another state

Iowa has a reciprocal agreement with one state: Illinois. An Iowa resident working in Illinois files Illinois form IL-W-5-NR with the employer, and only Iowa taxes the wages. An Illinois resident working in Iowa files Iowa form 44-016, Employee’s Statement of Nonresidence in Iowa. The agreement covers wages and salaries only. Iowa still taxes Iowa-source non-wage income of Illinois residents, and Illinois does the same in reverse.

Illinois is Iowa’s only income tax reciprocal agreement, so the exemption does not reach Iowans who work in Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri, South Dakota or Wisconsin. An Iowa resident working in Illinois should also give the employer an IA W-4 so the right amount of Iowa tax is withheld.
